FAQs for GreenLiFE Battery:
I want to upgrade to lithium iron phosphate batteries. What do I need to know?
When upgrading to GreenLiFE Batteries from lead-acid batteries, consider your capacity, power, and size requirements. Ensure you have the right charger as most existing charging sources are compatible with our lithium iron phosphate batteries. You may be able to downsize your battery (in some cases up to 50%) and maintain the same runtime. For assistance with your upgrade, please reach out to GreenLiFE Battery technical support to ensure you pick the right battery.
What is a BMS? What does it do and where is it located?
A BMS stands for Battery Management System. It safeguards the cells from damage, commonly from over or under-voltage, overcurrent, high temperature, or external short-circuiting. The BMS automatically shuts off the battery to protect the cells from unsafe operating conditions. All GreenLiFE Batteries have a built-in BMS to manage and protect against these types of issues.
What size terminals and bolts come on GreenLiFE Batteries?
GreenLiFE's LiFePO4 batteries feature M6, M8, or M10 terminals, which are insert terminals with bolts. The terminal and bolt sizes are metric, with the numerical signifier denoting the dimension in mm. For example, the M8 terminal has an 8mm diameter. Longer bolts, if needed, can be found at most hardware stores.
Can you mount the batteries in any position?
Yes, you can mount GreenLiFE Batteries in any position because they do not contain fluid like lead-acid batteries. This gives you the flexibility to install the battery where it best suits your application.
What’s the difference between parallel and series connections?
Parallel connections involve connecting 2 or more batteries together to increase the capacity of the battery bank. In this setup, the positive terminals of all batteries are connected together, and the negative terminals are connected together. On the other hand, series connections involve connecting 2 or more batteries together to increase the voltage of the battery system. Here, the positive terminal of one battery is connected to the negative terminal of another until the desired voltage is achieved. For example, connecting 2 x 12V batteries in series will result in a 24V battery system.
Will a 12V, 100Ah lithium iron phosphate battery give a longer run time than a 12V, 100Ah lead-acid battery under the same conditions?
Yes, a 12V, 100Ah GreenLiFE Battery (lithium iron phosphate) will provide a longer run time compared to a 12V, 100Ah lead-acid battery. Lithium iron phosphate batteries offer more usable capacity than equivalently rated lead-acid batteries, and you can expect up to twice as much runtime.
How do I prep my lithium battery for off-season storage?
To prepare your GreenLiFE Battery for off-season storage, charge it to 14.4 volts, then disconnect it from your charger and equipment. Store the battery in temperatures ranging from 23°F to 95°F (-5°C to 35°C). For storage periods longer than 3 months, it is recommended to store the battery at a 50% state of charge and within the temperature range of 32°F to 77°F (0°C to 25°C). Unlike lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries can be stored at a partial state of charge without causing harm.
Where can I buy GreenLiFE Batteries?
You can purchase GreenLiFE Batteries online with free ground shipping within the continental U.S. Additionally, they are available through dealers and distributors worldwide. GreenLiFEBattery.com
How quickly can I get my batteries after I order them on GreenLiFE Battery's website?
Online orders from GreenLiFE Battery are shipped via UPS ground from Menomonee Falls, WI within 1-2 weeks after placing the order. The actual transit time will depend on the shipping address, and you will receive an email notification once your order ships.
How do LiFePO4 batteries perform in cold temperatures?
LiFePO4 batteries, such as GreenLiFE Batteries, have significantly more capacity and voltage retention in cold temperatures compared to lead-acid batteries. However, when charging lithium iron phosphate batteries below 0°C (32°F), the charge current should be reduced to 0.1C or lower, and below -10°C (14°F), it should be reduced to 0.05C. Failing to reduce the current in freezing temperatures can lead to irreversible damage. GreenLiFE's LT Series is specifically designed for cold charging, utilizing charge current to heat the battery before allowing charging even below 0°C (32°F).
How do LiFePO4 batteries perform in hot temperatures?
LiFePO4 batteries perform well in hot temperatures until they reach the Battery Management System's (BMS) protection level. The BMS maximum temperature ranges from 60-80°C (140-176°F). Please refer to the data sheet for your specific GreenLiFE Battery model to find the exact upper temperature limit. These batteries produce less heat compared to other lithium chemistries, but if they reach the upper limit, the BMS will protect the battery by shutting it off.
Are there required certifications to ship lithium iron phosphate batteries in the U.S.?
Yes, the Department of Transportation requires UN38.3 certification for all lithium iron phosphate batteries to be legally transported via land, sea, or air.
What is the expected life of a LiFePO4 battery?
The life of a LiFePO4 battery, such as GreenLiFE Battery, is measured in life cycles. Typically, GreenLiFE's LiFePO4 batteries are rated to deliver 3500 cycles at 100% depth of discharge (DOD). The actual life expectancy depends on various factors specific to your application. When used for the same application, a LiFePO4 battery can last up to 10 times longer than a lead-acid battery.
What type of solar charge controller do I need to charge my batteries with my solar panels?
There are two types of charge controllers. Both work with GreenLiFE Batteries. Pulse width modulation (PWM) Maximum power point tracking (MPPT).
